There’s 47 precocious grade school kids taking part in a college course at St. Clair [College] this week.
The five-day, four-night session is one of only two like it in Ontario [Canada] which are run by Harrow [Ontario] native Mano Watsa.
Point Guard College’s [The Prep School] for boys and girls in Grades 7 through 10 started Wednesday and runs through Sunday, offering much more than just a chance to improve passing and dribbling.
Participants are also in the classroom learning leadership and communication skills and they must pass a final exam Sunday before they can graduate.
“We don’t even really like to call it a basketball camp,” Watsa said. ”This teaches not only what to do on the court but who you want to be in life. It’s far more than skills. It’s the pursuit of excellence.”
Point Guard College offers 45 sessions across the U.S. and Canada primarily for high school and college players. Offering seven sessions for prep school players is a new initiative this summer.
Windsor Lancers’ Emily Abbott and Miah Langlois recently attended [Point Guard College's College Session] in Boston run by former Windsor Lancer Sefu Bernard. ”It was a sold-out session and they were the only two Canadians there,” said Watsa, the president and part-owner of PGC.
PGC has run a sold-out session in Waterloo [Ontario] for the past five years.
